473 knob turns · 13,060 notes · Key C major · 7 takes, 2 muted
Piano's keyboard with a patch board under it: one instrument for the room, where some play while others turn the knobs.
What fold does here
Everything from Piano (held keys, chords, the room's key, the looper) plus the room's sound: one row per knob, each with its value and who set it last. Choosing a preset writes every knob in one transaction. Each knob let go of is recorded, so the board knows who's been tuning.
Fold keeps every knob within its range and every preset among the known ones.
Why it shows off fold
Storing the sound a knob at a time means two people can tune at once without overwriting each other: each knob is its own row, last writer wins. Every turn is pushed to every page from a fold subscription, and each browser glides its sound to the new value, so a held chord, or the loop, changes as it rings. The one thing that isn't stored is who's holding a knob right now: that lasts only as long as a drag, so it's pushed but never written.
Worth trying
- Have one person hold a chord while another sweeps Cutoff or Resonance.
- Record a loop, then tune the board while it plays.
- Watch the knobs take the colour of whoever set them last.
